Wikipediazensur in Großbritannien

Nicht nur in China wird das Internet bekanntlich zensiert, sondern auch in Großbritannien, wo es z.Zt. Verärgerung darüber gibt, daß Wikipedia für viele Autoren nicht mehr bearbeitbar ist. Auslöser ist ein uralter Hut von 1976, eine Hülle der Schallplatte "Virgin Killer" der Musikgruppe "Scorpions", auf der eine zu junge Unbekleidete, wenn auch selbstzensiert, abgebildet ist. Die ganze Seite der englischen Wikipedia, nicht nur das Photo, wird in Großbritannien blockiert, hier in Dtl. ist der Artikel noch zugänglich, die deutsche Wikipedia geht nur kurz ein auf früheren Ärger. Als Musikmuffel sind mir Schallplattenhüllen egal, das Bild regt heutzutage wegen kultureller Verschiebung im letzten drittel Jahrhundert vielleicht einige Nichtfkkler auf, das ist mir auch egal. Was aber mich heftig aufregt ist der Angriff auf die Informationsfreiheit, daß es anscheinend eine Art Kollektivstrafe für Wikipediaautoren gibt, die gar nichts mit dem Artikel zu tun hatten und haben.

BBC, 20081208, hat folgendes geschrieben::

Wikipedia volunteer David Gerard said he and fellow users were angry that as well as the photo, the text on the page had been blocked. "Blocking text is a whole new thing - it's the first time they've done this on such a visible site ... Jay Walsh, a spokesman for the Wikimedia Foundation, which manages the encyclopaedia, said the removal of the page also appeared to have stopped thousands of UK users from editing articles on Wikipedia, which allows readers to self-edit its pages."

In Dtl. 20081208 noch erreichbare en.Wikipedia hat folgendes geschrieben::

The UK block follows the May 2008 reporting of the cover image on Wikipedia by US-based social conservative site WorldNetDaily to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. An officer of the Concerned Women for America, a conservative Christian advocacy group, commented, "By allowing that image to remain posted, Wikipedia is helping to further facilitate per...sion and ...hilia." The May controversy prompted extensive discussion among Wikipedia contributors and was reported in the website's internal newsletter, which noted that "relevant content policies and community practices" state that "Wikipedia is not censored, and barring a legal imperative the decision to display or remove the offensive image rests with Wikipedia's users." EContent magazine subsequently reported that the discussion page associated with the article declared "Prior discussion has determined by broad consensus that the Virgin Killer cover will not be removed", and asserted that Wikipedia contributors "favor inclusion in all but the most extreme cases".

Wikipedia Foundation, 20081207, hat folgendes geschrieben::

As of December 6, 2008, most Internet users in the United Kingdom no longer have full access to Wikipedia. Due to censorship by the UK self-regulatory agency the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), most UK residents can no longer edit the volunteer-written encyclopedia, nor can they access an article in it describing a 32-year-old album by German rock group the Scorpions. Wikipedia visitors in the UK have also reported performance issues accessing the site. The IWF has confirmed to the Wikimedia Foundation that it has added Wikipedia to its blacklist

Das tut weh, wenn man u.a. Großbritannien dafür dankbar ist, daß in Europa vor einiger Zeit die Zivilisation wiederhergestellt wurde. Jetzt ist es soweit, daß Europa sich anfängt zu sorgen, wie dort der alte Spruch "it's a free country" in Vergessenheit gerät. Kürzlich gab es viele Kommentare von Lesern eines BBC-Artikels zur DNA-Speicherung von nachgewiesenermaßen Unschuldigen, mit der diese als eingeschränkt Schuldige abgestempelt werden. Groß war die Freude, daß der Europäische Gerichtshof einstimmig diese Praxis für unzulässig erklärt hat und so Europa die britische Bevölkerung vor der eigenen Regierung geschützt hat. Immerhin erfreulich, daß BBC solche Leserkommentare noch nicht löschen muß.
